How To Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance

The average American works 47 hours per week according to a Gallup poll. This is not including industries such as technology and finance, where the standard is above 60 hours per week. With so much time devoted to work, it can be hard to maintain a balanced personal life. According to the Mayo Clinic an overwhelming professional life can lead to fatigue and poor health. Though it may seem difficult to sustain a healthy work-life balance, there are simple strategies to create this equilibrium.

The Mayo Clinic suggests bolstering your personal lifestyle. Instead of having routine or boring weekends, schedule exciting activities with family and friends. Maintaining an active lifestyle will help you feel more satisfied with your personal and professional balance. Other sources, such as the Harvard Business Review’s article “How to Leave Work at Work” have indicated, “It’s exceptionally difficult — if not impossible — to not be distracted about work when you’re stressed out because you haven’t gotten your work done.” It’s important to differentiate between busy and productive as they aren’t necessarily the same thing. If time isn’t being utilized correctly, responsibilities will pile over into personal time, which is why so many people work after-hours. To prevent this, schedule blocks of time for high-priority focused work that can’t be interrupted.  The more productive you are at work, the more personal time you have.

Although, utilizing your personal time does not always mean being active. As important as it is to invigorate yourself with enriching activities, it is vital to have down time for relaxation. Frequently, after completing my work responsibilities for the day, I have immediately shifted my focus on chores that need to be completed at home. This thought pattern can be quite stressful at times. To alleviate that stress, I adopted the advice of The Muse and others and make sure to have personal time for relaxation. Although this may seem counter-productive, it energizes me to complete what needs to get done.

From an employer perspective, there are ways to help your employees with their work-life balance.The Society for Human Resource Management advises to never email or contact an employee while on vacation unless absolutely necessary. The last thing someone wants is for work responsibilities to ruin their vacation experience. As an employer, respecting time-off is a great tool to help your organization maintain a healthy work-life balance.
